Paul Signorino, MD, Clinical Associate of Surgery, died on Friday, January 23, 2026. He was 51 years old.
Signorino joined the University of Chicago faculty in 2021 as a clinical associate and quickly became a trusted and valued member of the Department of Surgery. He practiced as a general surgeon at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital and at the health system’s locations in Flossmoor and Orland Park, where he was known for his clinical skill, reliability, and strong commitment to his patients.
Those who worked closely with Signorino described him as kind, approachable, and generous with his time. He was a teacher and mentor — someone to turn to for guidance, support, or a moment of levity during a busy day. As a surgeon, he brought dedication to his work and was particularly known for making others feel welcome and at ease. Many who began as his colleagues quickly came to consider him a friend, drawn by his warmth and ease with others.
Above all, Signorino was deeply devoted to his family. He spoke often of his wife, Angelica “Angie” Tolentino, DO, a medical oncologist with the UChicago Medical Group, and their two young children, who were clearly the center of his life.
Signorino was a Chicago native from the northwest suburbs. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from Northwestern University, earned his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, and completed his surgical residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Prior to joining UChicago Medicine, he spent more than a decade caring for patients with DuPage Medical Group.
In a message shared with colleagues, Jeffrey Matthews, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery, and Mitchell Posner, MD, Chief of the Section of General Surgery, wrote, "Dr. Signorino’s passing will be deeply felt by colleagues, patients, and others who had the opportunity to work with him. In the time he spent with us, he made a lasting impression through his professionalism, loyalty, and genuine care for others."
